By Mark Patterson

There are hair loss types that are temporary, for example if it results from chemotherapy. There are others that are natural like in the case of ageing and which is no easily treated. There is the emotional distress that comes with hair loss and which explains why many people seek treatment for it. In consideration of hair loss treatment DE residents need to be well versed with the various options. If such loss is caused by an underlying problem, solving that problem solves the loss.

The use of medications is one of the ways to get treatment. An example of a medication is known as minoxidil and is approved by the FDA. It is in lotion form and can be used by both men and women. It is purchased from pharmacies without prescription. It is supposed to be applied on the scalp daily. Stronger versions have been found to be more effective than mild ones.

When the stronger forms of the medication are used, there are possible side effects like itchiness of the affected areas or dryness. This medication should be used over several months to get the desired results. Baldness resumes after usage is stopped. At the time, any hairs that were already growing will fall off. The second FDA approved medication is known as finasteride. It is designed for men and is available only through prescription. It is in the form of a tablet taken daily.

The medication works by preventing testosterone from getting converted into dihydro-testosterone. The latter is the hormone that leads to shrinking of follicles of hair, consequently blocking its production and allowing normal growth. It takes some 3 to 6 months for growth to be observed. If treatment is stopped, balding starts after between 6 to 12 months. Side effects are rare, with a few men experiencing erectile dysfunction and low sex drive.

Surgery is another option. Most people considering surgery have male or female pattern baldness. The use of surgery always comes after less invasive options have been tried and failed. The success of the surgical procedure depends on skill of a surgeon because there is possibility of complications. There are various forms of surgery.

One of the surgical options is hair transplant. It is done under local anesthesia. It involves removing small scalp pieces from areas that have lots of hairs. The extracted piece is divided into groups of hairs that are then grafted into sections without hairs. Several sessions are required which should be 12 months apart.

There is also scalp reduction whereby there will be removal of pieces of bald scalp fro the crown or top of the head. The aim is to move hairy sections closer to each other. The loose skin is cut then stitched back together. This can also be done using tissue expansion.

Tissue expansion is whereby there is placement of a balloon under the scalp. The balloon is inflated over a couple of weeks to expand the skin in stages before it is removed. This is a procedure that is designed for female baldness.
